All About Title IX

When a group of women were asked "What Does Title IX Mean To You?" here are their responses :

Judy Sweet was first appointed as director of the Athletics for the University of California, San Diego she was often asked if that position fulfilled a life long dream.  When she was elected president of the NCAA she was asked does that position fulfill a life long dream.  While Judy wish she could have asked yes, the reality in both situations -- never could she have imagine that she would have had those opportunities if not for Title IX.

When you think about the history of college athletics -- women have a 75 year disadvantage.  There are some individuals that blame Title IX for institutions that make adjustment to their sport program due to Title IX.  However, there is nothing in Title IX that suggests institutions drop sports opportunities for either male or female.  Title IX is really about adding opportunities, and providing opportunities.

Prior to Title IX there were no opportunities for female athletes sponsored by public high schools, colleges or universities.  Title IX is the gold key that has opened the door for opportunities.  Title IX commonly thought of a just for athletic is really for all aspects of education  -- ensuring that there is no discrimination based on gender.
