Why I have Dreads!
I started my dreadlocks 11 years ago. If you've read my profile, you might have noticed that's the same time I started by business. Many people have a hard time walking away for a paycheck to the unknown. I too had that problem. I was very good at my job, and every time I resigned - they offered more money. Who could turn that down?
Well, in 1997 dreads weren't an acceptable hair style, for the office. It took me 6 months to decide to dread my hair, but I knew my business could make it if I gave it 110%. The rest is history, except I wasn't fired. I quit from the fear of being fired.
Nevertheless, YS Auxiliary Services began and I have never regretted my decision. Little did I know, my hair would serve me in more than just help me to walked away for a weekly check. Today, every conference, meeting, or business event I attend - I stand out. Probably not because of the dreads, but because of the length of my dreads. Hence, I never have to remind someone - I attended, I was there, I went. Along with my experience, skill, and unique look, once you meet me you don't forget. Believe it or not, most people compliment my hairstyle - especially men.
It's funny how things work out. You never really know, but if you don't go with your gut - you're making a mistake. Remember, no regrets!
History of DreadLocks
Dreadlocks have been in existence since Ancient Egyptians times. They were also seen on Asian emperor's, cavemen, John the Baptist, Samson, and now ME.
The word dreadlocks or dread-locs came from Jamaica. Rastamens named the hairstyle from the words fear and horror. Now locs can be found all over the world.
Myths and Facts about Dreads
- Locs are dirty - As with any hairstyle, if you don't wash your hair - then it's dirty. Locs should be washed once a week. Thus, dreadlocks are not dirty if properly care for.
- Only people of African decent can lock their hard - Locs were present in biblical times and seen on many Egyptians, Asians (Non-African).
- Dreads can't be removed - False, If you cut the locs to 3 inches and soak the rest in VO5, you can comb them out. Thus leaving you with 5 inches of your hair.

I love your hair i've been growing my dreads now for about 7 years I've never had an official problem at work about them. I have on the other hand had people look at me with a bit of contempt when I've walked into meeting maybe because they thought i was a little to hip hop instead of just being me.
Love your locs which are so popular here in Brooklyn, NYC. I've had mine for years and cannot imagine a different look. As a long time career teacher they have never been an issue.
In fact my locs were quite popular when I lived/taught in Korea (2002-2007). In fact they are becoming popular in Seoul; the young were intent on mastering the look and soon did and opened salons. There is a Korean Reggae group now and the lead has locs.

Having locks in ancient times was a thing of power and beauty. ysdata, I admire your courage to walk away from your job. From all accounts, it appears to be the right decision for you.
A very good friend of mine sports dreads and she loves them.
She to has done some work on the internet to dispell the myths of dreads.

Great mythbusting also,my son had dreads from 18 months,he asked to cut them this year he's 12,so like you said I cut them to about 3-4 inches and just washed really good and combed out the rest and he had atleast 6-7 inches of hair when they blew it out at the salon to braid it.
But now less than a year later he's back to dreading.
