- If you owe on more then one student loan, sort the federal student loans from the private student loans. Federal and private student loans have different relief options.
- Call the student loan lender before you are in default. It's easier to work out some sort of relief options if you are not already in default.
- Relief options could be deferment or forbearance. It your financial trouble is short term use the deferment relief option. Student loan deferment can span up to 3 years. Student loan forbearance allows you to skip payments, however interest is still occurred.
- You may choose to consolidate all your student loans into one. This allows you to make one monthly payment that could be lower then your current separate payments. The lower payment is achieved by choosing a long repayment term.
- Consider IBR. IBR stands for "Income Based Repayment". IBR allows you to restructure your student loan payments based on your income.
